If you’re going to go with a Wordpress site, it's good for the theme to meet these requirements:
🌸 Responsive: this means that your site is compatible in mobile, tablet & desktop views
🌸 Fast
🌸 SEO-friendly
🌸 Clean code: this makes sure the theme is compatible with your plugins and it also prevents bloat (which slows down your site)
🌸 Regular updates: the theme must be up-to-date with the latest Wordpress version
🌸 Good support
🌸 Compatible with website builders (depending on which one you use - there are good builders such as Beaver Builder, which is a free to download. Gutenberg is the default Wordpress page builder)
There are free and paid WordPress themes. If you pick a free one, I'd be careful to choose from a trusted site. Also, paid themes tend to get updated more and come with support and richer features. You can find free themes in the WordPress Repository, but I would check reviews to see how often it gets updated; outdated themes and plugins are one of the biggest reasons sites get hacked.
Here are my favorite Wordpress Themes (that work with Gutenberg & Beaver Builder):
🌷 Astra: very beginner-friendly with good design options
- Pros: SEO-friendly, has templates (starter sites) already made for you, good free version
- Cons: advanced features not on free version
🌷 GeneratePress: clean, simple, lightweight & fast
- Pros: SEO-friendly, good free version
- Cons: slight learning curve, free version does not have pre-made templates
🌻 Tip: 'Generate Blocks' plugin works well with GeneratePress if you prefer Gutenberg style, but if you prefer visual design, I recommend Beaver Builder.
Kadence is another great theme with a very good free version that you can download from the Wordpress Repository. You can also use 'Kadence Blocks' to design your theme.
